With the anti-plastic fever, bars and vending machines have replaced single-use polypropylene cups, restricted by the EU SUP Directive, with cardboard cups, also single-use, not included in the Directive. The point is that cardboard, unlike plastic, is not impermeable to liquids and therefore to be used as a glass it needs to be lined inside with a sheet that makes it waterproof, and do you know what this sheet is made of?  read more

"Mesocosm trials reveal the potential toxic risk of degrading bioplastics to marine life"

"Abstract. If biodegradable plastics tackle the marine plastic pollution problem sufficiently remains questionable. To gain more insight in degradability, performance, and the impact of degradation on the toxicity, commercial bags made from two biodegradable plastics and one conventional plastic (PE) were exposed for 120 days in a mesocosm featuring benthic, pelagic, and littoral habitat simulations."

Professor Ricardo Beiras was invited by the Club Peña Trevinca – Montañeiros de Galicia (Galician club of outdoor activities, such as trekking, climbing, ski, among others) to talk about the plastics problem in our oceans. After the projection of the documentary “Oceans: The Plastic Mystery”, Prof. Beiras disclosed some myths and facts about plastic pollution and talked, as well, of the effects caused by plastic additives.
